MacBook keyboard shortcuts and special characters
I must confess I’ve done something very evil. One of the first things I did when I received my MacBook was install BootCamp and then Vista. Let’s assume I had valid reasons for this and to give credit where credit is due, the MacBook has been the only computer that has run halfway stable under Vista.
However since that day I’ve been trying to chase down a couple of special characters and keyboard shortcuts that just don’t seem to exist on the Mac keyboard.
Here are the most important one’s for me:
- The pipe (|) : Shift + Alt + L
- Backslash (\): Shift + Alt + / or Crtl + Alt + ß on German keyboard layouts
- The “at” sign (@): Crtl + Alt + q or Crtl + Alt + l on German keyboard layouts
Another sensible alternative and a generally very helpful tool is: Erik Olofsson’s “Input Remappper“. A tool developed to remap all kinds of characters and actions, but works like a charm on the MacBook under Windows. It auto detects that you have a Mac keyboard and remaps a lot of keys to sensible combinations. Go give it a try and let me know if you’re still missing any important keys… ;)
