How to disable Skype autostart

With the update to Windows 7 I also updated Skype to version 4 on all my machines. Looks good and works fine, but at some point I realized that I would actually like to disable the autostart function as I keep working on multiple machines and having conversations gets bothersome.

In the older versions you could find this option under:
Skype -> Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> (untick) Start Skype when I start Windows

With version 4 this option has disappeared and it took me quite a while to figure out how to disable the autostart. The function is well hidden as follows:
Skype -> File -> Sign out -> (untick) Start SKYPE when computer starts

A short while later I was stumped a second time as I was trying to figure out how to disable the Skype autostart on my Mac book, obviously this is hidden somwehere else again ;)

To disable Skype autostart on a Mac:

  • Start Skype
  • Right click the Skype Icon in your Dock
  • (untick) “Open At Login”

There’s also a 2nd method to disable the autostart function of Skype on a Mac:

  • Go to System Preference -> Accounts
  • Select your account
  • Click on the “Login Items” tab
  • Highlight Skype and Click on the “-” button

Done, you have just disable Skype from auto start!

Happy Skyping! :D
