Data Menu not available (grayed out) in Excel 2007…

By Cliff Kapatais | August, 13, 2008 | 46 comments

Just a quick one, I was playing around with endless Excel sheets yesterday and wanted to perform some filtering but for some strange reason all items in the quick access toolbar under “Data” were not available to me. They were simply greyed out all the time.

After a relatively short but frustrating search for a reason I noticed that it said [Group] up in the title bar after the file name.

Now group mode is very useful when you are editing several worksheets at once, all changes you make to one worksheet are made to all others in the group as well, but certain functions, such as all “Data” tools are disabled.

So, how to turn off group mode? Simple, just right-click any of the sheet tabs in the bottom of the screen that are in the group and choose “Ungroup Sheets” from the context menu. You will notice which sheets are grouped because their tabs at the bottom of the screen will all be white.

Once you ungrouped the sheets all your tools are back at your command.

Thanks for this! I don’t even know how I ended up in group mode, or even that it existed. And this article was much more helpful than the Microsoft site :)

Great post, I was operating on a remote server and couldn’t even see the “Group” notification at the top. Couldn’t edit a chart, and my Data menu was all grayed out. Thanks for a quick and easy solution, wish I knew how I ended up in Group mode! (was editing an old .xls sheet)

    Hey everyone.

This is great information. Sadly, it did not work for me. The buttons were greyed out because I was sharing the workbook.

(Review tab–>Share Workbook–>uncheck “Allow changes by more than one user at the same time”).

Great information. Saved me some hair:)

  • jerry

Thank you so much. Working on a complex 15 tab spreadsheet and suddenly found out about the existence of “Group” by its effects. Your quick solution saved me. Microsoft is not alone in their abject failure to follow any good standards for informing a user when an operational state is set on. Once one knows of the function of Group, it’s nice; just not nice to stumble on it.

By the way, love your website tagline.

Thanks so much – right to the point!

    Hi,

Thanks a ton! I did not have a clue that this was due to grouping. This was really bugging me today, when I am working on something important.

I tried 20 different searchterms and here we go, I found the solution. You brought a smile back on my face.
